Unfilled Space

Stretching the ol’ props one day this winter I stumbled across this empty lot.  After walking around its’ perimeter I determined this once run down, black top cracking corner of commerce was occupied by cars and their purveyors those land sharks better known as the car salesmen.  Immediately, my mind is filled with images of, not brand spanking new, shiny Cadillacs, Ford Galaxies, or Chrysler 300 F’s, no instead the used versions of these mighty cars.  Cars that have seen better days, cars with back seat carpet stained with years of family vacation food and vomit, battle scares of dents and dings, faded paint, and rusting motors.  Immediately after the previous immediateness the 1980 movie Used Cars crowds into the mind.  And there for a moment I see Kurt Russel, Jack Warden, Jack Warden, and Joe Flaherty battling back and forth as to who can sell the better old, worn, second-hand vehicle.  Luring cutomers from one lot to the other as they run, chase, plot, and whoo in all their late 1970’s fashion, style glory.  A moments longer pause a smile, and on my way I go.

Happy Trails

  1. Yes! I see the battered cars and frenzied salesman so clearly in this old lot, as you described. Not many, I think, would pass this rundown stretch of walk and take time to imagine what may have once existed. That takes a writer’s mind.
