Morning Adventure

Lowell, Oregon located 20 minutes south of Eugene is a small, quaint community where high school students meet under Cascade foothills in city square honoring loggers past.  The picture below of Lowell Covered Bridge is just outside city proper along South Pioneer Street built in 1945 replacing one constructed in 1907 due to damage from a freight truck.

Taking this picture looking at the bridge Lowell is located on the hillside behind me on a rise above Dexter Reservoir, South Pioneer Street bisects the reservoir which was constructed across the Willamette River in 1954.  A local resident I talked with says original foundations of homes can be found on the bottom of the lake adding that to preserve the town and to prevent locals from having to relocate it was moved to it’s current location above the lake.  The covered bridge no longer carries traffic instead, it is used as an interpretive center for Oregon’s covered bridges.

Enjoy

No longer in use the bridge is the cornerstone of a small rest stop on Dexter Reservoir interpreting local history.

Historical preservation is important and Lowell Covered Bridge is no exception.
